Directing/Producing / Oedipus [2009] / Reviews

Oedipus (****) [published on]

Sitting in Jubilee Square, the wind rushing past in all its glory, I began to wonder how long the novelty of an outdoors performance of such an infamous Greek myth would last; but I was pleasantly surprised when the tremendous energy and passion within the intimate space kept me captivated. This intense production boasted a simple yet imaginatively constructed set and a charming cast, with Jez Hughes giving a remarkable portrayal of Oedipus. Focusing on the ‘excitement and dread’ contained in the tragic tale, the effortless originality of this fast-paced interpretation would undoubtedly enchant anyone remotely interested in Greek mythology. And not even the cold could stop me from enjoying this charming production.
