Just a quick thought about money and the Fringe… How does everyone afford it? I was having coffee with a friend yesterday, and we agreed that there is little money in Fringe theatre. I think we can all agree that breaking even on a Fringe production is hard enough, but making a profit? Has Fringe theatre become almost completely reliant on sponsorship and grants, ie. free money? This is not necessarily a bad thing, if anything it’s a testament to the country we live in that the arts scene is upheld by government funding, but can’t we fend for ourselves? Do we either survive and make a meager living from free money, or do we bankrupt ourselves with an expensive hobby? Theatre is a bizarre world…
